Newsletter June 2017

Since ICOM Canada’s last Annual General Meeting in Halifax in 2016 at the Canadian Museum Association conference much has occurred. Among other activities, one of the most important was the hiring of a digital outreach and communications staff on contract. Her name is Katie Novak. Katie has been working at Fort Calgary in Alberta for more than five years, running their Education Department and also managing social media and marketing. Katie is very involved in her community, volunteering with with ‘Doors Open YYC’, ‘Beakerhead’, and several other community organizations. Katie loves connecting with the museum community across the country, and is very glad to be working with ICOM Canada coordinating social and digital media. We continue to host our Google Hangouts on Air, which are live interviews on Google Hangout, recorded and available on Youtube for viewing. This year we interviewed France Desmarais (formerly of McCord Museum in Montreal) of [...]

May 2016 Message from the President

Dear colleagues and friends, It is with great pleasure and honour that I write to you today as the newly elected President of ICOM Canada. I am following in the steps of remarkable individuals, and look forward to continuing their incredible work with my colleagues of the 2016-2017 Board of Directors. I want to thank everyone who attended our AGM in Halifax, NS this past April, and those who took the time to send in their proxy vote for the Board elections. Engaging with the National Committee’s work is crucial and I am happy to report that the members elected George Jacob, from the Philip J. We also presented ICOM Canada’s new Strategic Plan, which reinforces the Board’s commitment to you, our members, and to the international museum community Looking forward, we have set a goal to [...]

November 2015

Dear Colleague, As the year 2015 comes to a close, I would like to thank you for your continued support of ICOM Canada and our activities. With a new year ahead and some great initiatives in the works, I invite you to reaffirm this support by renewing your membership for 2016. After careful review, we are pleased to inform you that the ICOM Canada Board has decided to maintain the current fee structure as per the year 2015. We will be increasing the fees for 2017, however, and will notify you well in advance of what those fees will be. ICOM (Paris) has already provided us with a new membership fee structure, however, before we implement the new fees in 2017, ICOM Canada plans to clarify the percentage calculation payment to our parent organization. As a reminder the fee structure as it stood last year and which will remain in [...]

Newsletter May 2015

Dear ICOM colleagues, Apologies for having taken such a long time to write another newsletter, but your ICOM Canada committee has been BUSY! First, we have been reviewing and revising the mission, bylaws, and Strategic Plan for the organization. This was particularly necessary, as the bylaws had not been reviewed since 2012. After a very productive face-to-face meeting in Toronto at the ROM (courtesy of Ryan Dodge) the committee agreed that the new mission and vision statements should be as follows: MISSION ICOM CANADA highlights, celebrates, and fosters activities of Canadian members working in cultural heritage among the international museum community, and brings awareness of international cultural issues to the Canadian museum community VISION The expertise and the work of ICOM Canada’s members will influence and advance worldwide museology. In addition, we agreed that the strategic priorities for ICOM Canada should be to: 1. Make ICOM Canada more vital in [...]
