THE ARTS AND ARTS MANAGEMENT – Leadership and Cultural Institutions
What is involved in managing an arts institution, and how do we go about doing it today, in a world that has become increasingly complex and demanding? What constitutes the leadership one must be capable of providing within large cultural institutions?
For several years now, leadership has been a subject of great interest in private enterprise, as well as in the educational milieu. Through this book, we hope to further contribute to the discussion of this matter and to inspire the practice of arts management. It offers a detailed analysis of the dynamics at work in arts organizations and exfamines the way in which their leaders have chosen to meet the challenges with which they are faced. This analysis is supported by the views of important leaders on the cultural scene who have been able to ensure the success of their organizations: Nathalie Bondil, Director of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts since 2007; Philippe de Montebello, Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from 1977 to 2008; and Stéphane Lissner, Director of La Scala in Milan since 2005, who will be taking the reins of the Opéra national de Paris in August 2014.
